MDI Canister Pressure Tester
This machine contains several novel modules. Pressurised metered dose inhaler canisters are picked from a rack, bar code scanned (2D bar codes), shaken and heated and checked for pressure leaks and dimension change.
The shaking system is driven with Linmot motors (http://www.linmot.com). These allow precise positioning, complex shake speed and acceleration profiles and a push force variable in the measurement module. The push force variable allows the machine to cope with different canister dimensions but still accurately position the canister head onto the measurement datum plate.
The shake profile concept allows the unit to copy as directly as possible a manual shake as the machine is required to replace a manual test that has been refined over a number or years. Changes to this manual method required validation which was to be avoided due to time constraints.
The MDI canister measurement system is based around Renishaw laser micrometers. These units measure widths of the barrel at various positions to sub micron accuracies. The machine also contains two five place Mettler balances so the canister weights can be very accurately measured to determine leaking over relatively short periods.
