Automated Stabiliser Extraction System

Click to Enlarge This system was required to extract the plastic stabilisers from (polyolefins) plastics for Gas Chromatography/HPLC/Thin Layer Chromatography analysis. This was done to find out why plastics degrade such as become brittle/fade/warp when heated/subjected to sunlight etc.

The plastic samples were desolved in solvents (decalin) and heated to 250ÂșC and refluxed (boiled and re-condensed - to avoid any vapour loss during boiling) The mixture is shaken for about an hour which allows the polyolefins and stabilisers to dissolve homogenously. Once the polyolefins have dissolved a precipitant is added (a low chain alcohol such as methanol) which makes just the plastic polymer chains solidify and precipitate out. This leaves the stabilisers in solution. The solution is removed through a 100 micron pre-filter (which removes the larger precipitates) and passed through a 0.45 micron filter into a 2ml HPLC vial.
